Fashionable by Design
It’s here.
In fact, this year's fashion extravaganza has already begun.
Designers from around the world earlier this week converged in New York for Fashion Week – to exhibit their much-anticipated Spring 2008 collections. Today we find ourselves three days into Fashion Week, which runs from Tuesday, September 4 through Wednesday, September 12, 2007.
Fashion Week – New York
The City So Nice They Named It Twice hosts two major "Super Bowls of Fashion" each year. The big names in fashion travel to the Big Apple to unveil their fall designs in February, and their spring collections in September.
New York goes out of its way to welcome high-powered media moguls and Hollywood movie stars who come to see – or perhaps to be seen – at one of the planet's most publicized fashion events. Last year, the city promised to provide a newer, bigger showcase to house the bi-annual event, but it appears that the traditional venue at Bryant Park will continue for a few more seasons at least.
Early in this week-long extravaganza, we have already begun to see up-and-coming talent pronounce their credentials to the fashion community.
Designer Josh Goot made a daring and fresh statement Wednesday with his asymmetrical jersey dresses and skirts, and signature geometric patterns and metallic details. With techno beats in the background, Goot’s tone was sexy and modern as he incorporated models with nude faces and hair swept back in ponytails. Goot also chose to experiment with color and contrast even more than in previous seasons, successfully straying away from his signature monochromatic looks.
There will also be a few A-list celebrities to watch out for this year. A record five A-list celebrities will take their designs to the runway this week in New York. Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Nicky Hilton, Chloë Sevigny, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen will all try their hand as designers on the New York stage.
Exquisite surprise, or fabulous folly? We’ll have to wait and see what Fashion Week has in store for these celebrity - and other - fashionistas.
