Skin Care Article: The Benefits of Vitamin A

Having healthy skin is central to your well-being. Yet many of us don’t realize this until it is too late and we have unsightly problems such as acne, dark circles or wrinkles that make us feel like hiding.  More than anything, you can feel proud of how healthy your skin looks by adding a sufficient level of vitamin A into your skin care regimen.  

Vitamin A plays a part in controlling the synthesis of DNA and helps to promote not only healthy skin, but helps to form and maintain healthy teeth, skeletal and soft tissue, mucous membranes, and promotes good vision - especially in low light. But that’s just the beginning of vitamin A’s benefits.  With skin, vitamin A is found in its ester form, retinyl palmitate which is not only it’s most stable form, but it helps to normalize the moisture of skin.  But that’s not the only thing this wonderful antioxidant does. It also helps to deactivate the actions of free radicals which can help to protect healthy skin collagen from sun, smoke and pollution that contribute to the formation of wrinkles and loose looking skin.  The easiest way to help your body fight signs of aging with vitamin A is to eat it.

When looking to increase your diet with Vitamin A, you should look for Beta Carotene.  It can be found in a variety of foods that are orange such as, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, winter squashes, cantaloupe and apricots. It can also be found in broccoli, spinach, and most dark green, leafy vegetables. The more intense the color of a fruit or vegetable, the higher the beta-carotene content.  And of course, because of the benefits this wonderful antioxidant has, it  is also in all of my nutraceutical items.
